When I first heard about "dollhouses for boys", I was not sure that I wanted to pursue the subject any further. But it turned out I was wrong. There are plenty of dollhouses for boys that are truly for boys. I found out that there was a Rocket Ship dollhouse for boys. And a Submarine dollhouse. Moreover, there were regular wooden houses - similar to girls' dollhouses, minus the pink walls and white lace. They are straightforward wood color houses that have open floors, entire walls removed so one can get access to the inside, and they are definitely dollhouses for boys. There is even a castle set - looks kind of like a dollhouse, except in the shape of a castle, and instead of Barbie, it has knights, dragons and other rough strangers ready to do battle.

What is great about dollhouses, whether for girls or boys, is that they function as a foundation, a base for all kinds of imaginative play. A well designed dollhouse enhances child's creativity and imagination. It gives a little bit of structure to an otherwise totally free-flowing play that kids are known for. Having said that, don't even think for a moment that kids will use a dollhouse, however well chosen for them, in the manner that grownups would expect. I mean they will, but they will also surprise you time and time again by using them in a manner you would never have thought possible. I have seen a simple wooden dollhouse used as a construction site, as a castle to be stormed, as a space ship launch facility, and finally, as an object of an aerial bombardment. Hey, this was a real boy's dollhouse. No, it did not survive the bombardment, but at least the kids had the sense to do it in the backyard, not on the kitchen table.

It is also important to remember that parents are always welcome in their kid's games. As grownups, we are taught to leave other people alone. But kids love it when parents play children's games. Kids delight in seeing their parents laugh, make silly mistakes. When a parent joins child's world, the memories and emotional bonds will benefit both parents and children throughout their lives.

For a parent, such play is an opportunity to relax a little, forget the "real" world. More importantly, such play is a great opportunity to impart knowledge and wisdom to your child. In a play setting, children are much more receptive to new knowledge, words of caution or advice. Thus a dollhouse for boys can becomes a vehicle for transferring knowledge from one generation to another. If you can get grandpa or grandma to join in, then you have three generations playing together, laughing together and learning from each other. Even if you "only" have fun, those memories are priceless, and will be with you for a lifetime.
